CHARLEVOIX RECREATION RECEIVES CHARLEVOIX COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANT FOR CAMP MCSAUBA ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
The City of Charlevoix Recreation Department recently received a grant to incorporate environmental education within Mt. McSauba’s day camp curriculum.
Camp McSauba is an 8-week multi-themed day camp located at Mt. McSauba. The camp is designed for children ages 5-13, with a primary goal of providing a safe environment where they can grow emotionally, socially, and physically through developmentally appropriate activities.
The camp offers a unique approach through a combination of hands on activities that enhance motor development, promote independence, foster a positive self-image, and promote creativity and exploration of their surroundings.
The Recreation Department received support to drastically impact the camp curriculum through an intentional increase of environmental education and awareness. “We intend to enhance our current programming to include an interwoven theme of environmental education, adventure education, and social-emotional development,” said Recreation Director Kent Knorr. The additional programming will emphasize science, writing (journaling), and a connection to nature.
Through the assistance of Charlevoix County Community Foundation, Charlevoix Recreation will offer specific training for Camp McSauba staff, purchase science equipment, environmental education materials and exploration tools.
